IS YOUR CAR INSURABLE?

Recently, it has been reported that certain year, make and models of Hyundai and Kia automobiles are no longer insurable by State Farm or Progressive. The risk of theft of these vehicles is simply too high.

While State Farm and Progressive are not dropping existing customers, they are declining to offer coverage for new customers or customers seeking to add the affected vehicles to their existing policies.

In response to these increasing thefts, and according to Forbes magazine, Hyundai is reimbursing owners for wheel lock purchases and is providing free software updates. Hyundai is also offering a Compustar Firstech glass-break sensor security kit at its dealerships, but these kits will set you back $170.00, plus the cost of installation. Currently, 2015- 2019 Sonatas; 2020- 2021 Venues and 2017 -2020 Elantras are eligible for the free anti-theft software upgrades. Additional vehicles will be eligible for the software update by June. As to Kia models, according to the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration, Kia is also rolling out its free software updates, in a phased approach, beginning at the end of this month. Those Kia owners affected, will be receiving letters with instructions regarding scheduling an appointment for the upgrade to be installed.

The NHTSA has also reported that both Kia and Hyundai have been working with 77 different law enforcement agencies in 12 states (including Pennsylvania) in order to provide more than 26,000 steering wheel locks for distribution, since November 2022. If you own an affected Hyundai or Kia, contact your local law enforcement agency to see if they are participating in the free steering wheel lock distribution.
